Granite Supply for Public Spaces: Nedre Torg Project, Norway | PARDAIS®

Nedre Torg, Ski city centre made by PARDAIS®

The urban regeneration of Nedre Torg square, located in the town of Ski (Nordre Follo municipality, Norway), required the selection of materials with mechanical properties suitable for climates with a wide temperature range and subject to frequent freeze-thaw cycles.

PARDAIS® was the company selected to process and supply the granite for this public works project, with the use of Alpendorada Blue Granite being a particular highlight.

The project involved transforming Ski’s central pedestrianised square into a continuous and accessible circulation area. Due to Scandinavian weather conditions, the tender specifications stipulated strict requirements for compressive strength, low porosity and anti-slip properties to ensure pedestrian safety during winter.

Technical Specifications of the Raw Material

The Alpendorada Blue Granite used in this project was quarried directly from PARDAIS®’s own quarry. This granite is technically characterised by:

  • A low water absorption coefficient, which minimises the risk of frost-induced cracking.
  • High mechanical resistance to compression and abrasion, suitable for areas with heavy pedestrian traffic.
  • A bush-hammered and flamed surface finish ensures compliance with regulatory friction standards for outdoor paving.

Production Capacity and Products Supplied

The scale of the project required an integrated industrial solution to meet the schedule set by the Norwegian client. Production at PARDAIS®’s industrial facilities involved the manufacture of various product types:

  • Granite Paving Slabs: Supply of over 3,000 m² of calibrated slabs for the main paving.
  • Tactile Paving Slabs: Production of slabs with standardised relief patterns for wayfinding and accessibility for visually impaired people.
  • Specialised Kerbs: Production of kerbs for flower beds and kerbs with an integrated drainage system for rainwater runoff.
  • Cubes: Supply of granite cubes for transition zones and the geometric layout of the public space.

The logistics plan was organised to ensure the phased delivery of materials in line with the installation stages on site. All the processed granite was palletised, labelled, and dispatched directly from our facilities in Portugal to the construction site in Norway.
